Among the many varieties of pale roses cultivated, the rose of Damascus is most likely the result of a hybridization between the Rose de Provins (Rosa gallica) and oriental rosehips or Rosa centifolia. It was introduced in Europe by the crusaders and its essence has the reputation of universal remedy.
