What organic labels are

Organic labels are officially recognised certifications affixed on certain products. They show you, consumer, that some goods have some particularities that others don’t have. However, some labels are stricter and more controlled than others. Therefore, some dishonest companies that attempt to greenwash you. But keep this in mind: the more regulated a label is, the better.

Organic labelling should not be something easy to affix on a product range. Otherwise, what would be the point? Therefore, always look for regularly controlled labels. Better even: check whether their control body is independent or not. Why does all this matter? Because unfortunately, some companies prefer to choose free certifications that have no real value. As they don’t have to pay for them, they don’t have to prove anything. You can thus not be sure a product is truly organic. Nevertheless, we need to make a clear distinction between the food and the non-food sectors.

Organic labelling for food and non-food sectors

Regarding food, organic labelling is rather strict, at least in Europe. Every organic food products we buy are carefully audited. As a result, they bear the European organic logo; a guarantee of their organic quality. In addition to this label, companies and producers may affix another logo on their products. A Belgian example is Biogarantie, for instance.

If you’re looking for non-food products, it’s another story. There is no official European organic label for this sector. So, what can you do? Fortunately, there are some committed and honest labels on the market willing to make a change. They implement their own criteria regarding the organic quality of non-food products. But beware: all labels are different and have distinctive requirements. You should be aware of their standards before making your decision. Need a little help?
