Purpose

Why we do it: prevent greenwashing

What it is

Greenwashing is a marketing technique. To sell more, some brands claim their products are environmentally friendly. However, in practice, their products are not ecological. The consumer is then misled. The Ecogarantie label helps the consumer to quickly find ecological and organic products.

How to read the label

Inci

The list of ingredients must be written on the product packaging or an insert respecting the following rules:

  • The names of the ingredients must respect the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). It consists in a single ingredient labelling name for each material that can be understood by everyone around the world.
  • The ingredients need to be listed in descending order of predominance. However, ingredients with a concentration lower than 1% of the formula can be randomly classified but must be listed below the other ingredients.

Labels

Labels are affixed on the product packaging to guarantee the quality of a product. In the food sector, there is an European label which meets certain standards.

Unfortunately this is not the case in the non-food sector. This lack of an European label has resulted in the emergence of some private labels, to guarantee the organic quality of the products. To get labelled by Ecogarantie, a product must comply with strict criteria set forth in the specifications. This compliance is controlled by third-party certification bodies conveying impartial judgment.

Pictograms

Several complementary pictograms can appear, depending on the type of product, its use or precautions to be taken. These pictograms can be classified in different categories: packaging and precautions at use.
